I’ve released a few tapes for NO CARS and seen their evolution from a novelty pop band, to a fully-fledged juggernaut of originality and FUN. This is the third album POST/POP has released for NO CARS and it’s the best by far. A concept album where the concept is ” Japanese Girls Do Bollywood” is so far deep into the rabbit-hole, we may never see the light of day.
‘Yoko Does Bollywood’ continues the No Cars tradition of name checking as many foodstuffs as possible until the actual product has no meaning and all you know about ‘Curry’ is what lead singer Haruna tells you. I originally believed Curry to be a nice menu option, preferably as hot as possible, but now I know it to be integral to a dance routine and cultural confusion.
The incredible onstage banter which makes their live shows phenomenal (Last friday at Paper Dress in London saw masses of people turned away!) is reproduced on this record in the form of between-song skits – a la Snoop and Dre – about their impossible journey to India and the pitfalls of going on an empty stomach.
Along the way to India they also meet an ‘Owl’ and ponder what it would be like to be one – pretty good in turns out; and also find time to respond to one of their previous hits ‘Sellotape’ with a counter-argument in ‘Tipp-Ex’. Which is the best piece of stationery? You can only find out by listening to the album.
If you know POST/POP you will already know No Cars and will likely have already clicked on the SHOP link at the top of the page, but if not, here it is again:
