Recently I made a mental note to make an effort to release more music from UK bands. It wasn’t that I was neglecting the UK, I just thought I could do more to promote bands locally. “You can’t start a scene if you spread yourself too thin, Jed” I said to myself in the mirror. I had the best damn intentions, but then I heard JUDE and though they had American affectations to their accents I crossed my fingers that they weren’t from New York. I wanted this band to be from Scunthorpe. “Florida” I noted to myself, nodding slowly. “Close enough”.
So what was it about this dream-pop duo ( I feel like I’ve written those words quite a lot recently) – Kevin James Neal and Sydney Morris – that made me so quickly abandon my stance? Well there was a point about a month ago when you couldn’t read a music blog without JUDE getting a mention as the best thing since sliced nice AND every track I heard was a certified song 3 in the soundtrack of my life. Now what we have before us is ‘The Bedroom EP’ and if you can – just for a minute – listen to the tracks below and let yourself forget the fact it’s Valentines Day and remember that the pressure to create a shining facade of your relationship, on today of all days, isn’t paramount, you will find yourself swept up in the sheer beauty of it all. Because fucking hell, it IS genuinely beautiful.
Yes, ‘Drive’ is probably the standout track, it’s cinematic imagery of the post-traumatic head-clearing drive just-to-drive is ever so haunting but still manages to be one of the best pop songs I’ve heard this year. The stripped down version is a borderline tear-jerker but in the same way that its namesake movie ‘Drive’ is almost ‘Gone with The Wind’.
JUDE are relatively a new group, but if this is the state of things to come, people will be having onto this cassette for dear life. I really like how we have gone for quite low key artwork, unassuming with blurred lights peering out of the void. It compliments the music (and POST/POP) perfectly.
